Civil society representatives propose a meeting with the presidential candidates.

In March 2018 the RA National Assembly will elect the fourth President of the Republic of Armenia, who will assume office on April 9, 2018.

On December 14, 2017 “Yelk” bloc announced its intention to nominate NA MP Artak Zeynalyan as a presidential candidate.

On January 19, 2018 current president Serzh Sargsyan made a public offer to Armen Sargsyan, the Armenian Ambassador to the United Kingdom to be presidential candidate [TN: from the Republican Party].

Neither Artak Zeynalyan nor Armen Sargsyan have been nominated by one-fourth of Armenian MPs thus far, as defined by the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia. Moreover, Armen Sargsyan has not announced about his final decision yet.

Although the nomination of presidential candidates and the election of the president are exclusively the prerogative of the National Assembly, however, the two candidates have expressed their desire to meet with civil society representatives.

Appreciating Armen Sarkissian’s and Artak Zeynalyan’s approach to meeting with civil society; highlighting the involvement of wider public in the presidential elections and the competition of ideas; as well as wishing to present the position of civil society on a number of issues to potential presidential candidates, we, the undersigned organizations, announce our proposal to meet simultaneously with Artak Zeynalyan and Armen Sargsyan.

During a simultaneous meeting with the two presidential candidates, civil society organizations will have an opportunity to hear the candidates’ positions on the issues raised, as well as to present their expectations from the future president.
